Breakfast is Served

Do your entertaining plans include overnight guests? It can be stressful to also prepare breakfast the next morning after hosting the day before, but don’t worry! We’re sharing our favorite make-ahead french toast recipe – it’s super easy to prepare in advance and is overnight guest approved.

Baked French Toast Casserole

  • 1 loaf of French or Challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups milk (whole milk or any milk of your choice)
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • Optional toppings: maple syrup, honey, fresh berries, powdered sugar

  1. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray. Arrange the cubed bread evenly in the baking dish.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  3. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes in the baking dish, making sure all the bread is coated. Press down slightly on the bread to help it absorb the liquid.
  4. Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight, allowing the bread to soak up the egg mixture.
  5. In the morning, preheat your oven to 350°F.
  6. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and melted butter until combined. Spread this mixture evenly over the soaked bread in the baking dish.
  7. Bake the French toast casserole in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown and set in the center.
  8. Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
  9. Serve slices of the baked French toast casserole warm, with your choice of toppings such as maple syrup, honey, fresh berries, or powdered sugar.
